Just so you know, the language code for Malayalam is ml, not mal. You might want to look at some other Malayalam entries to get an idea about formatting. I'll also give you our standard welcome template with links to more information.

Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Chuck Entz (talk) 05:33, 27 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

രക്തം

[edit]

I added ചോര (cōra) to രക്തം (raktaṁ). Does the first word ring a bell to you? --Apisite (talk) 06:43, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oh yea it does! GoateeBoi (talk) 06:48, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Vegetables in Malayalam

We use templates like {{topic}} to organize entries by certain applicable categories. --Apisite (talk) 07:35, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I added the entry ചെണ (ceṇa). --Apisite (talk) 07:50, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Can an admin get rid of a misspelled entry? GoateeBoi (talk) 07:51, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

SemperBlotto (talkcontribs) got rid of what you called a misspelling. --Apisite (talk) 07:52, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
If you want something deleted immediately, then use the template {{delete}}. --Apisite (talk) 07:53, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Also, I think you mispelled it again. Check out this Wikipedia article. https://ml.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%9A%E0%B5%87%E0%B4%A8 GoateeBoi (talk) 07:55, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Little Lotus Fairy Tale

[edit]

Have you ever come across the new Little Lotus fairy tale? Would you like to see the fairy tale translated into Malayalam? --Apisite (talk) 00:28, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'm not interested, besides I can't translate into Malayalam at this point (or read it). Currently I'm just leeching off my parents for words to enter, and from public domain works. Is it just me, or was this story published by an affiliate of 法輪大法? I suspect so since the second page mentions 真,善,忍, which are the three of its values. I understand that they stand in opposition to the 共產黨, but they still hold values with which I disagree.
Would you share the children's book with your family or even anyone else? --Apisite (talk) 02:32, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

I wouldn't. I am Christian, and while I do not object to 真,善,and 忍 individually, I don't think a human being can practice them to perfection on their own, to get away from the storybook crocodile, toads, or snake/worm. I wouldn't tell a story to a friend that or family member that I don't think encapsulates something true. I do view this fairy tale as a religious work, though I am ignorant of the actual canon of 法輪大法 beliefs. --GoateeBoi (talk) 03:19, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

At least there's also The Church of Almighty God (also known as Eastern Lightning); besides, Falun Dafa as well as The Church of Almighty God are about at least giving up human attachments. --Apisite (talk) 03:31, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Or, put another way, casting off the sinful nature. --Apisite (talk) 03:51, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
The Church of Almighty God has a Malayalam YouTube channel if you're interested. --Apisite (talk) 05:05, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Formatting problems

[edit]

Hi GoateeBoi. You've been creating a lot of entries, which is great, but a lot of them have been pretty messy. I've pinged you with some edits that I made to your entries. Please look at the changes, and then go back through your contributions to fix your edits. Also, please don't put Wikipedia links as a reference — if you need access to better references, I'm sure our Indian editors would be happy to help. If you have any questions about formatting, feel free to ask. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:14, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Several editors are now busy cleaning up your messy entries. Please take a quick break, and look at our edits so that you understand how to format entries going forward. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:28, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wow thanks, I never thought I would get this help. I'll take a look at the changes next morning (12/29 ET).I look forward to becoming a better wiktionarian.

Wolof issues

[edit]

Judging by your user page, you're using the Peace Corps dictionary to add Wolof terms. There seem to be some orthographic issues with it (e.g. ndës, which I had to move to the correct form), and more generally, Peace Corps dictionaries are not very reliable, as they're made by volunteers without any linguistic training. Moreover, you're missing basic information, like the noun class (as shown by the definite article) that should be in all entries. You should definitely not import entries en masse from this source, when there are many better dictionaries available (my favourite is the one by Jean-Léopold Diouf, but others can be found on Library Genesis). —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:22, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'll try to revise my class notes to include definite articles. This is no excuse or qualification, but my interest in Wolof started with a 101 class last semester. I'll check out that dictionary.
GoateeBoi (talk) 04:33, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry, Wolof is blessed with multiple good dictionaries (though it helps if you read French) and lots of resources, so it shouldn't be too hard to work this out. Let me know if you need help finding resources and figuring out how best to add Wolof content. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:37, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Remind me to do a few things 12/21 Morning ET

[edit]

I'm going to write short term goals on my talk page rather than on my user page.

  • Make entries for Wolof demonstrative pronouns
  • Make entries for Wolof interrogative pronouns
  • Write examples for such
  • Cross-link such

Some desires of mine that I can't do yet since I don't know how to make templates are

  • Make entries and make a template 🤔 for Wolof definite articles (Consonant classes k,l,j,y,w,m × Near, Far, Relative)
  • Make a Wolof verb morphology template (both directly on and off the verb)

Let me know if you have tips! Right now I'll do some Malayalam before going to bed. GoateeBoi (talk) 06:22, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

We definitely need templates for various Wolof tables, and it's best to create those first (so you can put a table of demonstrative pronouns in the entries as you go, for example). I can help you make them, so let me know. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:52, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

പാല് & Wolof

[edit]

You may read this message after sleeping:

I moved പാല് to three new categories, and added {{ux}} to fii and kii. You may replace the latter template with {{uxi}} if you want. --Apisite (talk) 06:59, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

തീയ്യ്

[edit]

Does the word തീയ്യ് really mean fire? --Apisite (talk) 04:30, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes. A native speaker told me so. GoateeBoi (talk) 06:22, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Challenges instead of Resolutions

[edit]

Wouldn't it be better to rename the section "2021 resolutions" to "Challenges for 2021 and beyond"? Better to have New Year Challenges than to have New Year Resolutions. --Apisite (talk) 00:30, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
