Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
- Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
- Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including, there is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
- The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
- We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Audio
[edit]Thanks very much for adding audio to entries. If you would, please use {{subst:PAGENAME}}, so that the audio file name is not dynamic. --EncycloPetey 22:02, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, whoops! Sorry. I was just copying and pasting from the Category:Requests for audio pronunciation page. I'll go correct it on that page now. Thanks for letting me know! DroEsperanto 22:08, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- And thanks for correcting the advice page. --EncycloPetey 22:15, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Audio
[edit]While I endeavored to listen to, trim, and clean up each recording I did, a few are clipped, awkward, noisy, or whatever else. If you find one of these, please don't hesitate to replace it, whether or not it is mine. This is still a wiki, and it is therefore designed to be edited, updated, and changed. Audio is no exception, in my opinion. You may wish to include in the comment a note about what was wrong and why you are changing it, for the benefit of patrollers.
I think Connel was originally running an extension to Dvortybot that inserted audio into Wiktionary entries directly. It looked for the end of the Pronunciation section and then backed up to before any lines having to do with rhymes or hyphenation, and which did not already have audio of some sort. This program generated an errors-and-omissions list (on the order of five to ten percent of entries) that I usually filled in by hand, with the aid of a button I added to the user interface.
I'm not certain, but I think I did do the first 6000 audio files entirely by hand. I don't program, so I have only a general understanding of how it all worked. Probably the typo you mention is built into a bot somewhere that I don't personally control, but I'll check on it if ever I get going again. --Dvortygirl 04:05, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
