[edit]Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
References
[edit]Stop adding spurious inline references to everything you do. They are simply not helpful, nor are the sources you add seemingly even particularly reliable. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 10:55, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- not sure why you think the references are spurious, but if you prefer, i wont add any references in the future. i was simply under the apparently misinformed impression that wikimedia valued and even required citations Brawlio (talk) 11:19, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- Wiktionary is not Wikipedia. We don't provide inline references for everything we do. References are mostly used for etymologies, usage notes and occasionally pronunciations. Senses (and by extension translations) are supported by quotations, not by references. — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 12:02, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
Adding Translations
[edit]Please be more careful with adding translations for words and phrases. I noticed on the gaslight entry that you added "alumbrar gaseiformemente", which seemed very strange to me. If you Google "gaseiformemente", you can also see that the translation you added is the only search result that has it, which means that it's simply not used at all. I've removed the erroneous translation, but I'm concerned about the large amount of translations that you've been adding. For now, please be more careful with adding translations and refrain from adding mass translations until a proper review can be done, and make sure to verify that the translations you're adding are actually used. Thank you. AG202 (talk) 20:33, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
More translation formatting
[edit]A few problems with this diff:
- Please don't add references to translation tables. References belong in entries only.
- Please use commas rather than ampersands.
- The gender marker c is for common gender, a distinct phenomenon seen in e.g. Swedish. m or f is the correct format for Romance languages. Ultimateria (talk) 20:23, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- this dictionary Diccionario de anglicismos del español estadounidense uses a common gender label so i didn't think it wouldn't apply to castilian. but it's no problem for me to use the "masculine or feminine" label; i just figured the common gender label was more concise Brawlio (talk) 20:38, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
