Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! PseudoSkull (talk) 08:23, 22 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia templates

[edit]

Hi Luis. I see that you've imported a bunch of templates from Wikipedia, and I wanted to ask you to stop. Some of the templates are redundant to those we already have, and some are simply not useful or needed. In general, Wiktionary is different from Wikipedia, and we often don't need or want the same templates. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 03:58, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

OK. Wikidata links would be updated to similar templates (so, one know which one use). . I have talked very well about English Witionary in other sister projects, because it manages in the best way the Wikidata links. Thank you a lot for the help. Best wishes --BoldLuis (talk) 13:42, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Metaknowledge can you see me which template use instead of {{image requested}}, please. (it would be good include the link to it in the deletion of the template, so I could go directly without ask). I cannot see Template:convert to convert Roman numbers (as XLIV to arabic numbers : some classic works uses Roman numbers and other uses arabic ones). Another idea, a Wikitraveller Guide For Newbies (help) in Wiktionary, for people that come from Wikipedia or other sister projects would be good. Am I fortunate be in Wiktionary. I think so. V --BoldLuis (talk) 11:29, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
{{rfi}}, and I don't think we have any need of Roman to Arabic numeral conversion. We have WT:WFW. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:22, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It costs me a little bit, but I am trying to remember (or I would walk the "tour" from wikipedia:template:image requested and them to Wiktionary. --BoldLuis (talk) 23:30, 16 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Module:foreign numerals and Module:roman numerals. —Suzukaze-c 02:37, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Suzukaze-c. Thank you a lot. Are they only in Wiktionary or in other Wikimedia sisters?. BoldLuis (talk) 14:57, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Picture requests

[edit]

I think you're supposed to put this template in the entry itself, not on the talk page. Equinox 16:40, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

🤦‍♂️ . I used to put this message templates in the talk page. Can I suggest a message indicating that it must be put in the project namespace, instead of in the talk namespace?. Thank you a lot. BoldLuis (talk) 16:47, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well it won't kill anyone if you put it on the talk page. I'm just saying this is how we normally do it. We don't want to get buried in too many messages and templates everywhere. Cheers, Equinox 16:52, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Added the suggestion of put the template in the main namespace (entry) in the template usage documentation. It would be OK add parameter 1=EN as default. Can I try it by myself?. Thank you. BoldLuis (talk) 16:57, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
No, don't add English as a default parameter. In general, don't edit templates here until you're actually familiar with how they're supposed to work. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 17:41, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Metaknowledge If I put it in an English entry, why type 1=EN parameter?. No reason was given in the documentation. In any case, if the template must be user preferably in the main namespace, it would be said in the documentation. I added this useful detail for a newbie, but anybody can delete it if I have done it wrong or estimates newbies do not need it. BoldLuis (talk) The force of the reason or the reason of the force?. 18:09, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
(When I say "we don't want to get buried in too many messages and templates everywhere" I'm trying to say tactfully, don't create template stuff unless it's really necessary. This is not a performance question, it's just a question of complexity and having things calling things calling things to do Not Much.) Equinox 17:54, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have not created templates. Pressed publish instead of preview and saw one global template was not there. Reverted my edit, I have not created any template
Whoever calls my editing crap can meet me in the car park and get bruised
--> no, no, it was an angelical edit ;-) (lol).BoldLuis (talk) 18:09, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

mapadre

[edit]

Hi. Can you provide evidence for 'mapadre' in Spanish? I'm not finding anything, and I assume the term is jocular. Thanks, kwami (talk) 09:02, 25 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

For example, between much more ones, https://www.clarin.com/familias/jardines-rodantes-tribus-crianza-aprendizaje-casa_0__mqV4EYCP.html , http://www.lajiribilla.cu/articulo/de-lecturas-y-milagros-nada-estaticos-y-de-listas-provocadoras https://pablocisternas.files.wordpress.com/2021/01/mutis-por-el-foro-real-aspo-digital-final.pdf talks about this serious term. On the other hand, in the article “Sexismo y Lenguaje” (Sexism and Language), 1998, Dr. Soledad de Andrés Castellanos, makes references to the neutral termination in Spanish -e/-es.[1]. This source talks about mapadres. --BoldLuis (talk) 09:40, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Adding Japanese derived terms

[edit]

Hi - thanks for your contributions. Just a word of advice that when adding derived terms to non-English entries, you can't just put a translation without putting the term itself (like you did here). "Gaijin hunter" does seem to be attestable in Japanese as (がい)(じん)ハンター (gaijin hantā), but next time please make sure to add the Japanese as well. Thanks!
