Hello world :)
Right now I have a special interest in affixes! I've been trying to make Appendix:English prefixes as comprehensive as possible. I recently created Appendix:English prefixes by semantic category as an alternate sorting of it. I also have a third version that breaks it down by subcategory at User:Intersets/Categories, mostly as a place for me to experiment with subcategorization.

Tasks
[edit]Current focus
[edit]- Figure out a way to start synchronizing the different versions of the appendix again so I can finish the subcategorization.
- Figure out subcategories for the category Abstract in Appendix:English prefixes by semantic category
- Then work through any unsorted Abstract entries
- Then cluster the subcategories until everything feels reasonable
Later but hopefully soon
[edit]- Check all of these are in the appendix
- Adding the elements to Appendix:Chemical elements/English - could use examples, need to figure out a way to automate this
- Add examples to the appendix
- Go through other lists
- http://www.macroevolution.net/biology-prefixes-a.html - done A, 25 letters to go :)
- https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/dcbiol120312094thed/back-matter/appendix-i-anatomical-prefixes-and-suffixes/ - has examples
- see talk page
- Category:Translingual prefixes
- Consider scraping existing dictionaries
- Revisit questionable lists
- https://www.learnthat.org/pages/view/roots.html - danger: this combines roots and prefixes, and that is something I have mixed up in the past
- https://openmd.com/dictionary/word-parts/a - problem: turns out to be a list of root words. Some of them are flagged as [prefix] but many of the entries that don't have [prefix] on them are used as prefixes. Started going through this list and very quickly stopped. Not sure whether to return.
- https://www-taylorfrancis-com.proxy3.library.mcgill.ca/chapters/edit/10.4324/9780203421147-79/list-prefixes?context=ubx&refId=72293d0e-1746-4c34-bb3f-21874e8c67ca "Origins : an etymological dictionary of modern English" -- I did letters A through C and this source has a lot of root words listed as prefixes. The scan is also annoying to read. Probably won't return to.
- Add more lists if people send me more!
- Refactor my code for parsing Appendix:English prefixes and put it up on github so others can sort/filter/etc.
- Figure out how to set up a bot to automate sorting the content in Appendix:English prefixes into Appendix:English prefixes by semantic category
Entries
[edit]- don't forget about arseno
- figure out how to make entries properly
- make entries for the red links on Appendix:English prefixes

Completed
[edit]- Went through all of Category:English prefixes and added entries to Appendix:English prefixes. Added 2048 prefixes in the process! 😯
- Have incorporated prefixes found in the following lists to the Appendix:
- All of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_medical_roots,_suffixes_and_prefixes&oldid=1208358797#E and added those.
- https://www-sciencedirect-com.proxy3.library.mcgill.ca/science/article/pii/B9780702072222000329 Dictionary of optometry and vision science - didn't add many
- Warren: Dictionary of Psychology's table of prefixes https://mcgill.on.worldcat.org/oclc/1079363205 -- added a few
- Turned Appendix: English prefixes into table format and write a parser for myself to handle filtering by category / sorting / etc
- Identified most common variant of each prefix
- Set up a system of categories, subcategories, and a bonus column for doing things like sorting elements by atomic number.
- Added a column for examples to Appendix: English prefixes
- Added all the examples from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_prefix
- Added all the examples from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_medical_roots,_suffixes_and_prefixes
- Added a bunch of proper nouns to Appendix:English nationality prefixes
- Created a categorization scheme for the prefixes that seems reasonable (or at least, I feel I'm being internally consistent), as well as subcategories for every category other than Abstract (which is ongoing), and a way to see the prefixes filtered this way at Appendix:English prefixes by semantic category.
- Separated out senses of the ~50 terms in the appendix that I flagged as "ToSeparate", most of which involved first updating that prefix's entry
