Toast Skagen

Etymology

[edit]

Compound of toast (toast) +‎ Skagen. Coined by Swedish chef Tore Wretman in the 1950s.

The connection with Skagen is disputed:

  • According to Tore Wretman's biography he just chose a random location on a map.[1]
  • According to Ewa Wretman, his wife, the dish was created shortly after a failed sailing competition from the ingredients available in the galley, near Skagen in Denmark in 1956.[2]
