Automatically add template to character pages

[edit]

Shouldn't this template be automatically added to the Glyph origin section of all character pages and be only shown if there are glyph files in WikiMedia? I've noticed it doesn't appear in several of the pages whose characters I've uploaded. Tradittore (talk) 10:23, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

On further review, I noticed some pages (not all of them) already have the template in them, but it is not showing glyphs newly uploaded. It seems like the template is not activated until the page is edited (even with no changes) and published again. Check this for example 疊#Chinese, or this 卓#Chinese, it has the template and I've uploaded a file, but the template is not showing. Tradittore (talk) 10:37, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Apparently the template is not automatically updated, so a null edit (an edit not changing anything) is required for the new images to appear. So it is recommended to do so after adding new glyphs. On the other hand, I still think the template should be automatically added to all character pages (and probably also on the simplified versions, in my opinion). Simplified forms

[edit]

I have uploaded quite a few files, but I named many of them with the simplified form instead of traditional (they are listed as such as well on Hanziyuan. Maybe the template should look for both forms when looking up glyph files? And maybe the simplified pages should also use this template and look for all forms of the glyph? The template is too complicated for me to try and understand how to make that work though. Tradittore (talk) 10:23, 25 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

At the moment, the following pages have broken file links: , , , , , . In some cases, this is

not because no file exists on Commons, but because the file on Commons has a nonstandard name (eg File:不-seal.svg).

Wikicode Template

This might be a useful template change.

Possible to hide phonetic series?

[edit]

Is it possible to suppress the output of phonetic series box that this template produces? (@沈澄心 Just pinging you since I noticed you last edited the template and I'm not sure who else to ask.)

On some characters that belong to multiple phonetic series (such as ), I think it is better to have separate phonetic series per etymology, but perhaps the historical forms can still stay in the glyph origin section? Of course usually there are no historical forms so this is not an issue, but for this character there are. If you have any alternative suggestions please let me know as well. Cheers, ChromeGames (talk) 21:31, 8 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@ChromeGames: Done Done. Use {{Han etym|no_phon=y}}. -- 06:42, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@沈澄心: Wow thanks so much for implementing that so quickly! We've always been able to display just the phonetic series by passing another character with no glyph forms, so it's nice to be able to do the reverse now too. Thanks, ChromeGames (talk) 16:26, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@沈澄心: Sorry to double back but it seems I spoke too soon! For example (OC *ɡaŋʔ, *ɡraŋs, *l̥ʰuːms) should have a second phonetic series containing (OC *ɡraŋs), but it isn't currently possible to display this phonetic series without also showing a bunch of glyph forms of 競. And because that is the only other character in the series, the previous workaround I mentioned doesn't work. In this case, is it possible for a parameter to hide the glyph forms? I suppose then this template would somewhat be a container for two separate functions. ChromeGames (talk) 04:56, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@ChromeGames Use {{Han etym|競|no_img=y}}. 04:59, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@沈澄心: Got it, thanks again! ChromeGames (talk) 05:51, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
