To be improved
[edit]Identify Determinative and Rebus components for Phono-semantic compound characters- Composition between the components, like IDS composition sequence (not like English that all letters in a word is from left to right in a line, Hanzi could be left to right, top to bottom, center and surrounding, etc.)
The Italic text in{{term}}
is not suitable for Hanzi.- Same components from different Hanzi could be categorized. For example, 清, 晴, 請, 蜻 could be in 青 category.

- The Forth one could be achieved alternatively by the header "Descendants" (or maybe header "Derived Terms"?), see 青 for an example. --Wihwang 05:11, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- The question of “where to put descendants/derived terms” is perhaps better suited for Wiktionary talk:About Chinese characters, as it regards general formatting.
- To my eye, “Derived terms” is better, since “composition of graphical elements” seems most analogous to “composition of word elements/morphemes” – “Descendants” seems most suited to simplifications.
- Alternatively, we could define separate headers for Han characters – “Derived characters” and “Simplifications”, etc.

simplified vs. traditional
[edit]I've identifed a problem with this template, as it seems to use only traditional characters; this would seem to be something we should try to change to provide both character sets. --达伟 23:02, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Random space?
[edit]Why does this template now produce a random space between the parenthesis and the colon? Eg at 從, Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 辵 (“walk”) + 从 (“follow”). ChromeGames (talk) 07:20, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @ChromeGames I fixed it, but right now I still don't understand how the space could have ever not been there.
- The fix was actually quite easy: In Template:liushu (which gets included by Template:Han compound), there is an extra space between the closing parenthesis and the
{{categorize}}
template (see my edit diff). Removing this space fixed the problem. - But this doesn't explain why the space suddenly appeared. Using the Wayback Machine, I figured out that it happened sometime between March 24 and April 4 (no space; space appeared). However, neither Template:liushu nor Template:Han compound have edits in that time range.
- At first I thought this had something to do with
{{categorize}}
, but then I found this 2015 version without it (and back then there also was no space). - Maybe there was a Wikitext parser update or something. I don't know, I'm at my wits' end.
- Let me summon some template gurus! @Surjection, @Rua, @kc_kennylau Can you have a look at this? (You don't have to if you think this is a giant waste of time...)

- Okay, I think I figured it out. Take
abc [[Category:test]]:
for example. If we render it on Wiktionary (version 1.44), we getabc :
(with a space). But if we render it on Xenharmonic Wiki (still on version 1.35), we getabc:
(without a space). So it was indeed a parser update. I also found this Phabricator report which triggered the change. Tc14Hd (aka Marc) (talk) 17:46, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
