Documentation for Template:RQ:Milton Poems. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from John Milton's collected work Poems by Mr. John Milton (1st edition, 1645). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Note that this work contains both English and Latin poems with separate page numbering. Make sure you set |lang=la if you want to quote from the Latin section.

This work contains the first ten of Milton's sonnets; for later poems, see {{RQ:Milton Poems 1673}}. A table of contents along with a transcription of the text is available at the John Milton Reading Room.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |poem=mandatory: the name of the poem to be quoted. The following poems were published or written earlier, or have English Wikipedia articles about them; giving the parameter the value indicated in the first column of the following table will cause the template to link to a Wikipedia article and set the date appropriately:
Parameter value Result First page number
Arcades Arcades (originally performed in 1634) page 51
Il Penseroso Il Penseroso (before 1645) page 37
L'Allegro or l'Allegro L’Allegro (before 1645) page 30
Lycidas Lycidas (1637) page 57
Marchioness An Epitaph on the Marchioness of Winchester (unknown) page 23
Musick At a Solemn Musick (unknown) page 22
May Song on May Morning (unknown) page 26
Nativity or On the Morning of Christ's Nativity On the Morning of Christs Nativity (1629) page 1
Passion or The Passion The Passion (c. 1630) page 16
Upon the Circumcision Upon the Circumcision (c. 1633–1634) page 20

  • |section= – the section name of the poem.
  • |stanza= or |stanzas= – the stanza number(s) to be quoted from. When quoting a range of stanzas, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last stanza numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |stanzas=II–IV.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) to be quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |4=, |t=, or |translation= – a translation of the passage quoted into contemporary English.
  • |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
  • |lang= – specify |lang=la to quote from the Latin section of the work.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
