Mistranslation

[edit]

Vapahtaa is to set free in English, affranchir in French, and befria in Swedish. It is true, in the Christian religion, that by redeeming the graced ones Jesus has set them free, but I think there is a little leap of logic and something is lost in the translation when vapahtaa is translated directly as redeem. Lunastaa, or even ostaa is redeem, but not the word vapahtaa in and of itself. (In Swedish, there is another word also used in religious context, friköpa, that spans both concepts, i.e. to redeem and set free.)

In other words, freedom and the price that is paid for it are two different things, whether in a religious context or not, and it doesn't do to confuse the two. 174.25.84.172 07:23, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
