Stokes' etymology
[edit]@Djkcel Where did you see that Stokes compared this to Sanskrit रन्धयति (randhayati)? I can't find any mention of this word in {{R:cel:UkSs}}
at all. —Mahāgaja · talk 12:39, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- What up man, I think I got that via MacBain as the messenger actually. He said in his entry for lonn (“anger”):
- lonn, anger, fierce, strong, Ir. lonn, O. Ir. lond, wild. Stokes (Zeit.30, 557) doubtfully suggests connection with Skr. randhayati, destroy, torment.
- I guess I'd always assumed the Irish and Welsh were related. DJ K-Çel (contribs ~ talk) 20:16, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Djkcel: Thanks! The annotation "(Zeit.30, 557)" means it comes from an article in the Zeitschrift für vergleichende Sprachforschung (commonly called Kuhns Zeitschrift), not from the UkSs. —Mahāgaja · talk 07:09, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
