Missing an etym?

@Karaeng Matoaya, the entry at 구름 (gureum) derives that word from verb 굴다 (gulda, “to roll”), but I see no such sense here. Is 구름 (gureum) wrong, or is 굴다 (gulda) incomplete?

If 구름 (gureum) is correct, KO verb root 굴— (gul-, “to roll”) would appear to intersect with various Japanese terms of related meaning and similar kur- initial, including 繰る (kuru, “to wind something up”), 車 (kuruma, “carriage”, probably deriving from an underlying "rolling wheel" sense), くるくる (kurukuru, “spinningly, rollingly”). Possibly also kor- initial, ころころ (korokoro, “rollingly”), 転ぶ (korobu, “to fall over”), 転がす (korogasu, “to roll something, to make something roll”), etc. etc. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │^{Tala við mig} 17:23, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

@Eirikr The etymology at 구름 (gureum) is not correct.

The Korean word for "to roll" is actually 구르— (gureu-), whose first attestation is as fifteenth-century Middle Korean 구울— (Yale: kwuwul-). But as seen in *구불다, the dialectal evidence is strong that the OK form was actually *kwu(n)pul-. This is probably connected to 굽— (gup-, “to be curved”), as in curved wheels rolling (and also to various derived ideophones like 구불구불 (gubulgubul, “meanderingly”)) but not to any Japanese form.--Karaeng Matoaya (talk) 11:27, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
