Shapes of the glyph
[edit]@Kwamikagami: The usage note mentions the "reversed r" look and the "Tironian et" look, but the image in the lower right corner has a third appearance: it looks like an upside-down r rotunda, don't you think? —Mahāgaja · talk 07:18, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- That's in italic typeface, which is normal for Teuthonista. The problem is what it should look like in roman typeface, which while rare does occur. Denis Jacquerye noted a few possibilities, including reversed r.
- There are many problems like this in Teuthonista, Dania and the Swedish dialect alphabet. For example, there are letters that remain roman even in italic typeface. No-one seems to know what they should look like in roman typeface if a distinction is to be maintained. (Everson proposed that they should lean to the left, so that auto italic formating would make them upright, but that was rejected by Unicode.)
- If you click on the image you mentioned and follow it to Commons, it's categorized along with a number of other forms, and some textual examples. kwami (talk) 07:31, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Mahagaja A turned old-style '2' might be the best representative glyph for the info box. That would need to be crafted, and I'm already spending too much time on this block, but maybe a turned r rotunda would work. I'll play around with it. kwami (talk) 07:53, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's probably better for our audience. It wouldn't be any good in a roman font, because when set in italics it would become distorted. But it would work okay in an italic font. There are a couple other letters I set in italics, because in roman typeface they're not distinctive. kwami (talk) 08:00, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hard to get the ringed form from it, though. Past my bedtime, though. kwami (talk) 09:42, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
