léng?

[edit]

@The dog2 Are you sure about the first syllable? It seems irregular. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 22:46, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: I recall it sounds like lêng after tone sandhi. Maybe Neeweeg could chime in as well. The dog2 (talk) 22:51, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Do you have a video of someone saying this word? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:03, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: I don't, unfortunately. This is just from memory of how my parents would pronounce 蓮蓉包. The dog2 (talk) 23:19, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Could that just be Mandarin? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 23:54, 6 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: Unlikely. The way they would pronounce 豆沙包 and 叉燒包 were definitely not Mandarin unless they were talking to friends from China or Taiwan. In the latter, they would typically use the Cantonese pronunciation, so I suspect this might be an approximation of the Cantonese pronunciation into Hokkien phonology. @The dog2: Would you be able to confirm with your parents? It doesn't sound close to Cantonese and it doesn't seem like what's expected for Hokkien. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:12, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @Justinrleung: Unfortunately, I'm not in Singapore right now. Let's wait and see what Neeweeg says as well. I'll ask my parents when I get the chance to talk to them. The dog2 (talk) 01:15, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@The dog2: léng for 蓮 seems possible, since lkcnhm.nus.edu.sg/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/lkcnhm-e-books/LKCNHM-EBOOK-2019-0001.pdf indicates liân can be pronounced as léng or lêng after tone sandhi, although probably influenced by Mandarin 蓮 lián or as a habitual mispronunciation by some. However, it seems like like liân would be the proper pronunciation in terms of Hokkien phonology, like in 蓮花 liân-hoe. I usually pronounce it as liân-iông, sometimes liánróng, instead of léng-iông, while others may pronounce it as lin4 jung4. I think, in Singapore, we usually either use the dialect-specific pronunciations and phonology for dialect-specific food or an approximation of the original dialect pronunciation, e.g. 叉燒包 as caa1 siu1 baau1, chha-sio-pau, etc.; 酿豆腐 as ngiong4 têu4 fu4, iōng-tāu-hū, etc.. Neeweeg (talk) 01:25, 8 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Neeweeg: Thanks for your input. I think we should have liân-iông and wait till The dog2 confirms with his parents for the other pronunciation. The PDF you linked to indicates that it's lèng after sandhi, which means it should be lēng or lêng pre-sandhi. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:36, 8 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
