Chinese. Rfv-sense: "to wait a moment". This should be defined as a misspelling of 稍候 instead. For examples of such misspelling, see google:"稍後片刻". – Wpi31 (talk) 10:13, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
- Pinging @Tooironic who added this sense. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 22:12, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
- Makes sense as a misspelling. The guifan cidian only lists the noun sense. ---> Tooironic (talk) 04:24, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Wpi31, Justinrleung That being said, it is a very common usage. For example, just today I noticed it on an official government platform: 马上开始,请稍后. (It's also in my input.) ---> Tooironic (talk) 01:10, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- Indeed I find 稍後 as a verb extremely common, perhaps even more common than 稍候. I should also mention that 教育部重編國語辭典 includes the verb sense.
- However, being a common usage does not necessarily imply correctness: 稍後 = 稍 slightly + 後 later, and this construction lacks a verb morpheme to make it a proper verb compound. Compare this with other verbs:
- 稍 slightly + 候 to wait = to wait a moment
- 重 again + 試 to try = to retry
- 看 to look + 書 book = to read
- This news article demonstrates the ambiguity of such usage of 稍後, and how some people consider it as a misspelling.
- I'm not concerned about whether 稍後 used as a verb is common or inclusion-worthy or not, instead I'm concerned whether it is a misspelling or not. You may consider me as a prescriptionist, but the evidence suggests that it is only a misspelling and not otherwise. – Wpi31 (talk) 02:35, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Wpi31: I don't think 教育部重編國語辭典 is necessarily including a verb sense. If it were, it would be a separate sense on its own. 等一下 is often used adverbially. However, 稍後 does seem to very common, so I would suggest it be treated either as a misspelling or labelled as proscribed. It might also be good to put usage notes and cite this article or other more "authoritative" sources if available. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 03:03, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
