水獺 and 獺?

[edit]

@Justinrleung: I've read somewhere that modern Chinese speakers prefer the compound 水獺 / 水獭 (shuǐtǎ) over the lone 獺, is this true? Comparatively speaking, this would be something like Vietnamese rái and rái cá, with the former rarely used alone. Billcipher123 (talk) 06:42, 22 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Billcipher123: Perhaps, but 獺 seems to also be a hypernym for all of 水獺, 海獺 and 旱獺. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 07:06, 22 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
