[edit]Where did you get the definition? This instrument is actually a synonym for the taogu (鞀鼓, pellet drum), and is supposed to have predated lutes in China. 173.88.241.33 06:00, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
I guess it's possible that "弦鞀" refers to a taogu (鞀鼓, pellet drum on a stick/handle) that has had strings stretched along the stick, thus converted from a drum into a string instrument. 173.88.241.33 06:06, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

亦作“弦鞉”。乐器名。犹今之三弦。《旧唐书·音乐志二》:“琵琶、四弦,漢乐也。初,秦長城之役,有弦鼗而鼓之者。” 清毛奇龄《西河词话》卷三五:“三弦起於秦時,本三代鼗鼓之製,而改形易響,謂之弦鞉。唐時坐部多習之。”
