Cantonese pronunciation

[edit]

@Justinrleung Could you please double check the Cantonese pronunciation for me? I posted the video in the Rfd discussion, and the first syllable sounds like tone 1 to me, but I'd like a second opinion to be absolutely sure. I hope the Singaporean accent won't be too much of a challenge though. The dog2 (talk) 17:04, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@The dog2: It's tone 1 to me as well. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 17:07, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: I tried hearing the Hokkien and Teochew pronunciations, and I heard tone 1 for Hokkien. I can't make out the pronunciation for Teochew though since I don't know confidently how tone sandhi works in Singaporean Teochew. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 17:13, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: Yeah, Hokkien was my mistake. Teochew sounds closer to tone 3 to me. The problem with Singaporean Teochew (and Hokkien too) is that people came from different parts of the region, so you'll hear a variety of pronunciations, and a mixing of pronunciations from different areas. I'd say Singaporean Teochew mostly follows Shantou pronunciation, but some people speak it with a bit of Chenghai influence like what you hear in the video, and from Allan Tan's YouTube channel too, and a bit of Chaozhou as well (for instance, the word 夗 (to sleep) most commonly follows Chaozhou pronunciation in Singapore, but the Shantou pronunciation can sometimes be heard too). @The dog2: Okay, it doesn't sound that much like tone 1 to me because it's kind of falling, so let's just say it's tone 3 for Teochew for now. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 17:22, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
