Cognates?

Considering Middle Korean ᄀᆞᆮ다 (kotta, to say, as mentioned in the etym at 일컫다) and Japanese (koto, word, words), what chance of these being cognate?

Also, any overlap between the Korean verb root ᄀᆞᆮ— (kot-, “to say”) and (geot, “thing, fact”)?
