Considering Middle Korean ᄀᆞᆮ다 (kotta, “to say”, as mentioned in the etym at 일컫다) and Japanese 言 (koto, “word, words”), what chance of these being cognate?

Also, any overlap between the Korean verb root ᄀᆞᆮ— (kot-, “to say”) and 것 (geot, “thing, fact”)?
