One possibility is Turkish qar sevən (“snow-lover”). --Vahag (talk) 16:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- geogen.ge tentatively derives this from Persian garsevaz კვარია (talk) 16:40, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- Perhaps. That character is attested in Georgian as გარსევაზ (garsevaz). The change in the ending needs an explanation. Vahag (talk) 16:57, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- btw, acc. to geogen all the surnames derived from this name are Eastern Georgian. Regions that have/had Armenian populations: Kartli, Kakheti, Samtskhe-Javakheti. კვარია (talk) 17:02, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- That is also the part that has been under Iranian suzerainty for a long time. This name can't be explained within Armenian. Գարսեւան (Garsewan) is attested only since the 19th century and always for persons from northern Armenia, whereas გარსევან ჩოლოყაშვილი is from the 16th century. Vahag (talk) 17:27, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
