- Okay, though they do not explain the plant name. The explanation is found in Lane (linked): preparations from the plant have been used to wash the head; therefore it can be a nisba of خَطْم (ḵaṭm, “the nose and the mouth, snout”), though perhaps making such nisbae isn’t common for plant names and the variants with ت (t) instead of ط (ṭ) are frequent. so there is a chance that this relation is secondary. The observation of

that خ ط م (ḵ-ṭ-m) is خ ط ط (ḵ-ṭ-ṭ) is nice, so I can explain that root which is mostly snout words. Fay Freak (talk) 12:54, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
