Persian
[edit]@Vahagn Petrosyan: The correct cognate is surely خوشه (xōša). The suspicion is that غوز (ǧūz, “hump”) and the many variants of it we list are related, as well as the medium-term mysterious کوژ (kiwž, kuwiž, “fruit of the medlar”); the meaning “young, tender” matches غوره (ğure, “unripe”). There will be something to be said about the regular outcomes of certain Proto-Iranian combinations (a cluster of consonants?) and borrowing of Persian from other Iranian languages, I only find نیش (nēš) as a case where š is elsewhere z.
