Persian

[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan: The correct cognate is surely خوشه (xōša). The suspicion is that غوز (ǧūz, hump) and the many variants of it we list are related, as well as the medium-term mysterious کوژ (kiwž, kuwiž, fruit of the medlar); the meaning “young, tender” matches غوره (ğure, unripe). There will be something to be said about the regular outcomes of certain Proto-Iranian combinations (a cluster of consonants?) and borrowing of Persian from other Iranian languages, I only find نیش (nēš) as a case where š is elsewhere z. @Fay Freak: These words are too far in form. ող- (oł-) remains unexplained. Middle Armenian կոյզ (koyz) is possibly only a clipping of the older form ողկոյզ (ołkoyz). Vahag (talk) 19:20, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
