@Fenakhay, Fay Freak, according to Bittner, Maximilian (1900) Der Einfluss des Arabischen und Persischen auf das Türkische. Eine philologische Studie (Sitzungsberichte der philosophisch-historischen Klasse der kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften)‎[1] (in German), volume 142, number 3, Wien: In Commission bei Carl Gerold’s Sohn, pages 58–59 and the standard Turkish sources the formation is Persian and the Turkish is borrowed from Persian. I don't understand the layers of Persian borrowings in Turkish well. If the word does not exist in Iranian Persian but exists in Eastern Persian, then Turkish would have to have borrowed it very early on its route from Central Asia? But in Turkish the word is attested only since the 17th century. Could it have remained hidden until then? Vahag (talk) 09:31, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Vahagn Petrosyan, Fenakhay: What I said on پزونك (päzävänk). We record a prestige form of Persian, inasmuch as we record Constantinople Ottoman and cannot attest taraba or only one form of the native Turkish word for squirrel تیون (teyün). The solution could be very close if we, or the language researchers, did actual philological work, instead of attempting to reframe missing data, which is less parsimonious than just conjecturing it, owning up to one’s indolence.
