The origin of the toponym

- Because Turks invaded the region almost two thousand years after the city was founded and obviously learned the name of the city from the native peoples. - Irevan' as a toponym is a Turkic adaptation of the Armenian 'Yerevan,. Turkic peoples, during their migrations and conquests, might have borrowed local toponyms and adapted them to their phonetic system. - Unlikely to be adapted directly from Armenian. Turkish İrəvan corresponds exactly to the Persian form Īravān, not the Armenian Երևան (Erewan). Turks have been in contact with the Persians since they were in Central Asia, before meeting any Armenian. Vahag (talk) 13:43, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
