Etymology

From German Artischocke ("artichoke"), by folk etymological missreading as Ardschocke ("Earth-Schocke") akin to German Erdapfel, and the fact that some artichoke species have edible tubers. Ultimately Arabic الْخُرْشُوف (al-ḵuršūf). Compare Lithuanian ércziukas ("potato").
