[edit]First attested as scellagt in 1270 or 1273. Derived from Middle Dutch schilacht (“dispute, argument”). The toponym refers to a border area which was the subject of land disputes. Compare Cabauw, Hebrecht, Kijfhoek, Kijfwaard, Kibbelgaarn, Kibbelveen, Krakeel, Krakeelpolder and Strijkviertel.
