[edit]First attested as Het Hebrecht in 1867. Derived from Dutch Low Saxon hebrecht (“quarreller, egoist”). The toponym is a reference to territorial disputes between Groningen and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. Compare Cabauw, Kijfhoek, Kijfwaard, Kibbelgaarn, Kibbelveen, Krakeel, Krakeelpolder, Schellach and Strijkviertel.
