[edit]First attested as schaeddick in 1431. Derived from a contracted compound of Middle Dutch scade (“damage, disadvantage”) (here used in the sense "leser, smaller") and wijk (“village, settlement”). Compare Look, Meterik, Middelijk, Noordijk, Oostenrijk, Het Oostrik, Schadewijk, Schaijk, Westrik, De Zoeke, Zoeke and Zuuk.
