[edit]- (Eersel) First attested as scadiuech in 1283. Compound of Middle Dutch scade (“damage, disadvantage”) and wijk (“village, settlement”). The first element refers to either the inhospitable natural environment around the village or to its small size. Compare Meterik, Oostenrijk, Schadijk and Schaijk.
