First attested as Suijker hasschap in 1601-1602. Potentially derived from a contracted compound of zuid (south-, southern) and wijk (village, settlement). Compare Middelijk, Noordijk, Oostenrijk, Schadijk, Westrik, De Zoeke and Zuuk.
