Borrowed from French sarcophage, from Latin sarcophagus, from Ancient Greek σαρκοφάγος (sarkophágos, coffin of limestone, noun), from σαρκοφάγος (sarkophágos, flesh-eating, carnivorous), from σάρξ (sárx, flesh, meat) + -φάγος (-phágos).
