[edit]From Latin Sardīs, from Ancient Greek Σάρδεις (Sárdeis), ultimately from Lydian 𐤳𐤱𐤠𐤭𐤣 (šfard). As Welsh, American, and Canadian towns, named for the ancient Lydian city chiefly in honor of its role in early Christianity. Doublet of Sart.
