Diphthong is an Oghur feature. As seen in the Volga Bulgarian examples, a y appears before long a. This is why there is a palatalization in the Chuvash initial sound. Why are there no initial /ş/ in Chuvash сухӑр or сыр? Because they are short. If Oghuz, Oghur, Arghu refer to a long vowel, I think there is no reason to arguing further. Support, though can you give a source on that Volga Bulgar *šyaruw, and do we really need to separate Bulgar into three?
