*-augijaz

[edit]

Citing the wiktionary entry *ainaugijaz, I propose this entry should be *-augijaz.

Similar word building elements are *-fōtijaz (see entry OE -fēte), and *-handijaz (see entry OE -hende).

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

Proto-Germanic. Not a suffix proper, and the only proposed derived term failed RFD. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 11:48, 9 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

The entry has now been moved from *-augiz to *augijaz by User:Mårtensås, but the removal of the RFD template is premature. Its occurrence in compounds is still far better explained as [word] + *augô + *-(i)jaz (e.g. in *ainaugijaz). (Alternatively, if *-augiz is supposed, it can also simply be explained as *augô + *-iz.) So for Proto-Germanic it does not make sense to reconstruct a suffix here. — Mnemosientje (t · c) 09:16, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
