Etymology

Räsänen and Nişanyan suggest a derivation from *ȫ- (to think, to be aware) +‎ *-ŕ. Nişanyan compares to Proto-Mongolic *öber, Doerfer suggests Mongolian өөр (öör) is a Turkic borrowing from the form *ȫŕe.
