Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en(h₁)tmen-, itself from *h₂enh₁- (“to breathe”) + *h₁éh₁t-men- (“breath; soul”), whence also Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātman). For similar semantic derivation, Ancient Greek ψῡχή (psūkhḗ), θῡμός (thūmós), Latin animus and Persian جان.
