[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wirˀ(ē)tei, from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥- (“to burn”) (Černyx) or *wr̥H- (Derksen).
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vìrti (“to boil”) (3sg. vérda), Latvian vir̂t (“to boil”) (3sg. vęr̂d).
Indo-European cognates include Hittite [script needed] (urāni, “burns”)
