[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-, with cognates Lithuanian tupė́ti (“to crowd, to squat”), Sanskrit तोपति (topati), तुपति (tupati, “to hurt”), Ancient Greek τύπτω (túptō, “to beat, to smite”), Latin stupeō (“to stun”), possibly Proto-Germanic *þeubaz (“thief”), *þubōną.
