Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably from the l-participle *tulъ +‎ *-iti of otherwise obsolete Proto-Balto-Slavic *táuˀtei (to entangle, to coil) whence (via another extension) Lithuanian taujóti (to squash), Latvian taũjât (to wander). Possibly distantly related to Sanskrit तौति (tauti, to gain power, strength).

Verb

[edit]

*tulìti impf[1]

  1. to constrict, to cram, to congregate
  2. to contain, to enfold, to sheath (perhaps secondary from *tulъ, *tula (quiver, envelop) + *-iti)
(by extension) to hide, to shelter
