Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Probably from Proto-Indo-European *terp- (“to tremble, to quiver”) + *-ъkъ, cognate with Lithuanian tirpùs (“soluble, fusible”). Martynov tentively considers a reanalysis of an earlier *kьrpъkъ in order to match it with Lithuanian kir̃pti (“to trim, to cut”).
