From Proto-Balto-Slavic *strujas, from Proto-Indo-European *stru-yós, from *stru- (“gray-haired, old”). Cognate with Lithuanian strùjus (“uncle, old man”), Irish sruith (“wise man, sage”).

Vasmer says that it can be from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (cf. Latin patruus). Morphologically ptr->ttr->str + Proto-Balto-Slavic *-jas.
