Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/sterťi
Appearance
Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]- Derksen: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sterˀg-, from Proto-Indo-European *sterg-. Cognate with Ancient Greek στέργω (stérgō, “to love”) and with Lithuanian sérgėti (“to guard”), 3sg. sérgi, 3sg. past sérgėjo (Old Lithuanian sérgmi, athematic), Lithuanian sárgas (“guard”), Latvian sar̂gs (“guard”), with unexplained loss of -t-.
- Vasmer: Contamination of two separate roots, represented respectively by Ancient Greek στέργω (stérgō, “to love”) and Lithuanian sérgėti (“to guard”). The latter is cognate with Latin servō (“to save”), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (haraiti), 𐬵𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬙𐬌 (hauruuati, “to protect”).
