Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/sedъlo
Appearance
Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sedula if Latvian sedli / segli is not borrowing from Slavic, otherwise from Proto-Indo-European *sed- (“to sit”) + *-ъlo. Compare similar formations formed independently: Proto-Germanic *sadulaz, Latin sella; however, there may be a borrowing relationship between Slavic and Germanic, more likely the former into the latter.
If inherited from Proto-Indo-European, it could reflect *sédulos, presumably thematicized from earlier *séd-wl̥ (“tool for sitting”). But, there are historical reasons to doubt such an old word for “saddle”.
*-e- instead of expected *-ě- (cf. *sěděti, *sědlo) is explained by irregular phonetic development caused by frequency.[1]
