[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sírpas, from Proto-Indo-European *sr̥p-. Cognate with Latvian sirpis, Latvian sìrps; Hittite 𒊬𒉺 (šarpa-, “farming tool”), Sanskrit सृणि (sṛṇi), Ancient Greek ἅρπη (hárpē), Latin sarpō.
