Etymology

From *sъ- (good) + an obscure element *rět- with an epenthetic -s-, possibly from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wrēt- or *rēt-, also found in Proto-Slavic *obrěsti (to find, encounter). Cognate with Lithuanian surė̃sti (to seize).
