[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *pepelh₁-o-. Cognate with Lithuanian pelenaĩ (“ashes”), plė́nis (“speck, fine ashes”), Latvian plẽne (“white ashes on coals”) and Old Prussian pelanne (“ashes”).
