[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *peiśtei or *peiśātei, from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ- (“to mark, color, paint, decorate, embroider”).
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian piẽšti (piešiù), paišýti (paišaũ), Old Prussian peisāi, (peisāton).
