[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *álˀkinas. Equivalent to *olkati (“to be hungry”) + *-ьnъ. Cognate with Latvian al̂kans (“greedy, hungry”), Lithuanian álkanas (“sober”), Old Prussian alkīns (“sober”). Interestingly, the Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian descendants did not overgo a metathesis.
