[edit]Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *akwisī, probably from a Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷsih₂, from *h₂eḱ-. Cognate with Old Norse øx, Gothic 𐌰𐌵𐌹𐌶𐌹 (aqizi), Old English æx, Proto-Samic *ākšōjō.
