Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unclear:
- Varbot: Akin to Lithuanian nogė́tis (“to strive”). Machek further enlists Latvian naguôt (“to haste”) as a potential relative.
- Schmidt, Uhlenbeck: Cognate with Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌺𐍃 (anaks, “suddenly”) (adverb), Sanskrit अञ्जस् (añjas, “speed”), derived by Pokorny from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (“onto, on”), similar to English on.[1]
